what is a Right Camera and leses for me???

In this blog I am going to talk about right camera and right lenses for the people who are not full time professionals but want to capture things like professionals for a lot less money.

This is true if you know photography and you have those huge costly professional gears, you are going to make amazing pictures. Well!!! not completely true. Professionals do not mind carrying those heavy costly cameras and lenses because they know what they are doing and that is what is their bread and butter. But for people who are not professionals but very serious about photography and want to capture most of the beauty of the outer world, here is the deal.

These days all the camera makers are making really good gears for consumers. If you do not shoot in extreme situations you can definitely make professional looking images. And the best thing is, you need not carry those 10 kg bags now.

Here are few questions I am asked by the people.

Q. I want to shoot while I am traveling and I do not worry about super quality pictures. My pics should look great on web and upto 16x20 prints. Which are the right gears for me?

A. First things is always shoot in RAW and process it later. Even the worst raw processor will give you better quality than the jpeg at 100% magnification. I recommend following cameras.

Nikon D3100 + 18-200mm lens (tamron or sigma or Nikon with image stabilization).
Canon T2i + 18-200mm lens (tamron or sigma or Canon with image stabilization).
Sony NEX 3 + 18-200mm lens (tamron or sigma or Sony. Tamron makes few lenses for sony)

Q. I am a serious amateur and I want to shoot for my future nature photo gallery and want to make big prints but I do not want to spend huge on camera gears. What are the right gears for me?
A. This is a very interesting question, because even professionals do not want to travel with huge costly gears and want to get pro quality out of their cheap gears with their nature shots. The good thing is if you are shooting landscapes you do not need to worry about camera speed. Though it is needed for shooting fast moving objects like birds (I am talking about amateurs only, professionals always travel with pro gears). Here are the best deals.

Nikon D5100 - Nikon has developed very powerful sensor with this new generation. This camera has amazing capability of capturing many colors and details in a single shot. Which is highly appreciated across the world. Another best things is at base ISO the images are as good as full frame sensors, even upto ISO-640 and very usable by ISO-3200.

Cheapest and bargain lenses are Nikon 18-55mm + Nikon 55-200mm VR (usable by 135mm at f8 & f11 considering fine art quality). Sturdy tripod is always a must carrying gear. Dolica proline tripod is good.

And the best lenses for the money are Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 or Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 + Nikon 70-300mm f4-5.6 (provided you need to remove CAs in post productions with the Nikon, this lens is very sharp and very useful for birds and closed landscapes like mountains).

Canon T3i or T2i - This camera also shows very nice details. Its 18mp can definitely match the quality of old full frame canon 5d mark I. Plus you get a very nice video capability out of this camera. It has little low dynamic range which may give you little trouble with shadows. Then no worries shoot more exposures and merge them in a HDR photo. Lenses are same as Nikon, you just need to choose canon counterparts (Canon 75-300mm is very good for $150).

Sony - NEX5 and Lenses same as Nikons, you just need to choose sony ones.

Another very good suggestions. Buy the cheapest $120 50mm f1.8 lens from your camera brand. This lens is as good as pro grade lenses. And shoot panorama with this lens for wider view. That will show much more details in your image. Take couple of photos from left to right and stitch them into a pano using free microsoft software ICE (Image Composite Editor). Do not forget to convert images in .TIFF from your RAW files before using this software.

Q. I do not care about travel. I just care about portraits and I do not want to spend more money. What are the best gears for me?
A. This is where you need to outsmart the professionals. And that will happen with your creativity. Camera really does not matter in this case, even the cheapest Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XS will help. Portraits are all about lenses.

Here is the cheapest deal for any brand.
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8. With these two lenses use a monopod with your camera and you will get stunning looking shots with out of focus background and a lot of light on your model's face. If you want you use built in flash at times. And the best would be to use natural light to your advantage.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
